Aemulatio: A Silent Dialogue with My Inner World

Aemulatio (46"x46")
The canvas often feels like a conversation, a silent dialogue with myself, with the whispers of countless ideas that clamor for recognition. This piece, which I've titled 'Aemulatio,' is a profound reflection of that inner world, a testament to the endless dance of striving and becoming that defines my artistic journey and indeed, my life.
When I first laid down those deep, verdant greens, I wasn't just mixing pigment; I was recalling the vibrant energy of overgrown places, the raw, untamed spirit of nature pushing against boundaries. Then came the audacious yellows, bursting forth, a sudden sunbeam cutting through the dense foliage, a surge of optimism or a challenging thought disrupting the calm. I remember feeling a distinct tension, almost an internal 'aemulatio' between these colors, a desire for each to assert its presence without overpowering the other, much like different aspects of my own personality vying for expression.
The soft, tender pinks and light, airy blues emerged from a different kind of longing. They are the fragile hopes, the gentle moments of introspection amidst the chaos. As I dragged my brush, creating those uneven, blocky shapes, I thought about how we build our lives, brick by brick, experience by experience, often imperfectly, yet with purpose. And then, I allowed myself the freedom of the scribbles and the bold, graphic lines – the white 'm' shape, the vibrant orange zigzags – they were spontaneous outbursts, the unfiltered thoughts, the playful defiance against too much order. Each stroke was a momentary decision, a response to what had come before, an attempt to elevate or challenge it. This constant pushing and pulling, this self-imposed test to go further, to refine, to connect seemingly disparate elements, truly embodies the spirit of 'Aemulatio' for me. It's not about imitation, but about an intense engagement, a passionate contention with my own evolving artistic language, always reaching for something more.
There were moments of frustration, certainly. When a particular grey felt too heavy, or a line too rigid, I would scrape it back, or cover it with another layer, a quiet battle on the canvas. But in those very acts of correction, of striving to excel past my previous mark, I found clarity. The subtle inclusion of torn paper fragments, those almost hidden textures, are like snippets of memories or half-forgotten dreams, integrated into the present. They represent how even fragmented past experiences contribute to the richness of what we create now.
'Aemulatio' is more than just a title for this painting; it's a philosophy I live by. It speaks to the drive within me to constantly compete, not with others, but with my own potential, to always learn, always grow, always push the boundaries of what I thought I was capable of. It’s the constant yearning to better myself, to find new ways to communicate the intricate tapestry of human experience through color and form. Every color chosen, every line drawn, every texture applied was an act of this internal striving, a deeply personal and emotional journey to bring forth something authentic, something that resonates with the continuous, vibrant struggle and joy of being.
