Epoche II: The Soul's Suspension, A Liberated Breath

Epoche II (36"x36")
The canvas before me, `Epoche II`, is more than just a painting; it is a fragment of my soul laid bare, a testament to a particular moment in my journey. The title itself, "Epoche," speaks of a suspension, a pause, a significant turning point where judgment is held back to truly experience and understand. "II" signifies not merely a sequel, but a deeper dive into that very act of suspension, a second, perhaps more profound, exploration of what it means to halt, observe, and feel before defining. It is a commitment to the present, to the raw unfolding of existence without immediate classification.
When I began this piece, `Epoche II`, I poured the vibrant yellows onto the surface as if releasing a burst of pent-up energy, a primal scream of joy and life that had been silently accumulating within me. I remember feeling an almost childlike exuberance, letting the thick impasto build, layer upon layer, symbolizing the rich, complex tapestry of experiences that form our foundation. Each stroke of that bright, sun-drenched yellow was an affirmation of presence, a declaration of light against the encroaching shadows.
Then came the blues and purples, cool and contemplative, cutting through the effervescent yellow. As I dragged my brush, letting these colors merge and separate, I was wrestling with the duality of emotion – the profound serenity found in introspection, yet also the deep yearning for clarity that often accompanies it. The bold, vertical strokes of violet and azure were like moments of quiet defiance, standing strong amidst the swirling currents of life, while the lighter, more translucent blues suggested the ephemeral nature of fleeting thoughts.
The patches of olive green and earthy brown, I laid down with a sense of grounding. They are the quiet anchors, the parts of us that remain connected to the tangible, to the fertile earth from which all things spring and to which all things return. When I inscribed faint, almost illegible marks into these green fields, I was thinking of the unspoken narratives, the forgotten words, the whispers of history embedded in every moment.
The stark white areas, seemingly abrupt, were not voids but rather spaces of breath, of sudden insight. I imagined them as moments of pure clarity, where all noise dissipates, and a singular truth emerges, however fleeting. The textures I built, rugged and uneven, speak of the passage of time, of layers added and stripped away, of scars and triumphs etched onto the very fabric of being. There's a raw honesty in that unevenness, a refusal to smooth over the edges of existence.
And those small, fierce streaks of red – they were like sudden heartbeats, urgent and insistent, breaking through the calm. Moments of passion, of warning, of vitality that cannot be contained. They are the tiny, potent reminders that even within the grand suspension of `Epoche II`, life surges forward with an undeniable, vibrant force.
Creating `Epoche II` was an act of profound self-discovery, a visual diary of my internal landscape. It wasn't about illustrating a predefined concept, but rather about allowing the canvas to become a receptacle for my evolving thoughts and feelings, each color and line a direct conduit to the pulse of my spirit at that very moment. It is a journey of pausing, observing, and truly feeling the 'now,' without the rush to categorize or judge. It is, for me, a liberated breath.
