Ergo: The Tangible 'Therefore' of My Consciousness

Ergo (72"x50")

The blank canvas before me always feels like a silent promise, a boundless space waiting to hold the overflow of my inner world. As I stood before it, preparing to begin what would become 'Ergo,' I felt that familiar hum of anticipation and a deep, almost aching need to translate the intangible into something real.

When I laid down those deep, rich blues, I wasn't simply mixing pigments; I was diving into the quiet depths of my own consciousness. Each stroke was a descent, exploring the vast, often unexplored oceans of thought and feeling that reside within me. I let the paint build up, creating layers of cerulean and indigo, feeling the coolness and the immense weight of introspection. These blues are the quiet spaces where ideas germinate, where the mind drifts, unanchored, seeking its own truths.

Then came the vibrant oranges, snaking and winding across the surface. I remember feeling a sudden surge of energy, a need for connection and flow. These undulating forms felt like pathways, conduits for ideas and impulses, sometimes smooth and clear, at other times fragmented, pushing forward with a raw, almost urgent rhythm. They are the moments of sudden clarity, the unexpected sparks that ignite a new direction in thought, interrupting the calm blues with their assertive presence.

The chaotic scribbles, the precise lines, the fragmented shapes – they are the echoes of my internal dialogues, the constant chatter and sudden insights that make up my daily experience. When I drew those wobbly white coils, I felt the uncertainty, the persistent questioning that underpins much of my existence. The sharp, clean edges I contrasted against blurred, painterly patches represent the constant interplay between clarity and confusion, logic and intuition, in how I perceive the world. I thought about how our minds jump from one idea to another, making unexpected connections, creating this complex, ever-evolving tapestry of experience.

The flashes of gold, strategically placed, were my way of marking moments of insight, those rare, precious glimpses of understanding that illuminate the mental labyrinth. And the heavy textures, the thick impasto, that’s the weight of lived experience, the layers of time and emotion built up, one over another, creating a history on the surface.

All these elements, intertwined and overlapping, converged to form 'Ergo.' For me, 'Ergo' is more than just a title; it’s the very essence of my artistic and personal philosophy. It speaks to the fundamental truth of "I think, therefore I am," but expands it. It’s my visual statement that I exist, not merely as a physical being, but as a mind that thinks, feels, and creates. This piece is the 'therefore' of my consciousness, a testament to the fact that my thoughts, however abstract or fragmented, coalesce into something tangible and vibrant. I poured my existence into this canvas, allowing my thoughts to breathe and take form. It’s a reflection of the continuous process of becoming, of the perpetual 'I am' that emerges, inevitably, from the 'I think.'
