Fons: The Inexhaustible Reservoir of the Soul

Fons: The Inexhaustible Reservoir of the Soul

Fons (43"x35")

When I first approached this canvas, I felt a familiar pull towards the deep, quiet spaces within. As I began to lay down the expansive blues, stroke after stroke, I wasn't just painting a color; I was immersing myself in an oceanic depth, a profound stillness where thoughts and feelings reside before they are given form. It was like a descent into the deepest part of my own being, searching for the very core, the wellspring of everything.

Those bold, vertical blue lines that define so much of the composition, they weren't planned; they simply emerged as I felt the need to structure that boundless depth. They felt like ancient columns or the silent, unwavering currents of a vast, inner sea. I recall holding my breath, almost, as I drew them, trying to capture the feeling of something fundamental, unyielding, yet endlessly flowing.

Then came the vibrant flashes of orange and yellow. Ah, that was a moment of pure, unexpected joy, a sudden ignition of light within the profound blues. I felt a surge of energy, a revelation bursting forth from the quiet depths, much like sunlight piercing through dark water, or a single idea sparking into existence from the void. It was an awakening, a warm, exhilarating release.

And the red, that passionate, insistent red at the bottom — it wasn't anger, but a raw, vital pulse. As I applied it, I felt the earthiness, the grounding force, a reminder that even the most abstract depths are connected to a pulsating life force, a primal energy that sustains all creation. It anchored the ethereal blues, giving them a foundation.

The subtle shifts in teal, the contemplative greys, the swift, almost impulsive dashes of white – each was a fleeting thought, a shifting current in the great inner river, a whisper of something just beneath the surface, or a momentary clarity that illuminated the complexity of it all. That thin, arcing grey line that traverses the middle left, for me, it felt like a silent path, a connecting thread, or perhaps the gentle guidance through the rich, often bewildering landscape of the soul.

The title, 'Fons,' is more than just a name for this piece; it is the very heart of my intention. 'Fons' means 'source' or 'fountain' in Latin, and for me, it represents that primal well, the origin point of all creativity, all emotion, all understanding. It's the place where ideas are born, where the raw material of existence gathers before it takes form in the conscious world. When I named this painting 'Fons,' I was acknowledging that deep, inexhaustible reservoir within myself, and truly, within all of us – the silent hum before the symphony, the still water before the ripple – from which life and art continuously flow. It’s a tribute to the unending cycle of beginning and becoming, a recognition of where everything truly starts.
