Jaemi: Breathing Life into the Pleasure of Existence

Jaemi (48"x48")
There are days when the studio feels less like a workspace and more like a playground for my soul, and 'Jaemi' was born from just such a time. When I began this piece, I wasn't setting out to capture a specific scene or a singular emotion; instead, I wanted to bottle the very essence of living, of experiencing, of the sheer, unadulterated pleasure of existence.
As my brush moved across the canvas, I wasn't just applying paint; I was breathing life into a feeling. The initial layers of deep blues and greens, some murky, some bright, were like the first quiet murmurs of a new day, or perhaps the grounding hum of memory. Then came the explosion of yellow, so vivid and insistent. As I laid down those thick, looping lines of ochre and bright lemon, I felt an almost childish delight, a sense of playful abandon. It was the feeling of chasing a laugh, of finding joy in the most unexpected corners. These were the moments when my hand moved with its own rhythm, drawing paths that mirrored the winding, sometimes unpredictable, journey of life.
The bursts of orange and pink that emerge, peeking through, or layered boldly, are echoes of fleeting passions and tender moments. When I pressed the brush laden with a soft pink, I remembered a gentle whisper, a warm touch, a quiet kindness. And the sharp, energetic dashes of black and white? They weren't meant to constrain, but rather to give form to the chaos, like the delightful surprises and clear insights that punctuate our days. I remember deliberately making some of the lines thick and deliberate, while others were quick, almost spontaneous scribbles – a reflection of how some experiences leave a deep imprint, while others flit by like butterflies.
And then there are the little triangles, the dots, the almost-letters that pepper the surface. These are my secret language, the small, intricate thoughts that run through my mind, the quiet observations that make up my inner world. I imagined them as tiny moments of wonder, fragments of stories whispered only to myself. Each little mark, whether a simple dot or a quick squiggle, was a conscious act of finding beauty in the minute details, in the texture of everyday life.
The title, 'Jaemi,' is profoundly personal to me. In Korean, 'Jaemi' means fun, interest, enjoyment, but it’s more than just a superficial amusement. For me, 'Jaemi' is about the profound satisfaction derived from engaging with life in all its vibrant complexity. It’s the thrill of discovery, the warmth of connection, the quiet hum of contentment that comes from truly being present. This painting is my exploration of that concept – the messy, glorious, sometimes overwhelming, but ultimately exhilarating 'Jaemi' of being alive, of creating, and of inviting others to find their own moments of joy within its layers. It's a reminder that even in the greatest abstractions, there's always an underlying current of beautiful, vibrant energy waiting to be found.
