The Night Sea of the Soul: Unfolding My Innermost Self

Thinking of a night sea (72"x48")

The canvas before me is always more than just a surface; it's an arena for my innermost self to unfold. With "Thinking of a night sea," I delved into a profound meditation, not merely on the ocean itself, but on the expansive, often mysterious landscape of the mind when it's quieted by the dark.

When I started laying down those deep blues on the left, I wasn't just mixing paint; I was summoning the profound, immeasurable depths of the night sea. I thought of the way light struggles to penetrate that deep, how secrets are held in its embrace. The textured layers, scratched and built upon, were like the echoes of time, the sediment of forgotten thoughts, or the slow, rhythmic breath of the ocean itself. Each stroke was an attempt to capture that sense of vastness, the quiet power that can both soothe and overwhelm.

As the blues gave way to the fragmented greys and whites, I found myself thinking of the moon's ethereal kiss on the water, or the distant spray of a breaking wave. There's a certain beautiful chaos in these lighter areas, a shimmering surface that belies the calm beneath. I worked to create textures that felt almost like crumpled paper or ancient, weathered stone, mirroring the way light scatters and coalesces on the restless surface, reflecting the tumultuous yet beautiful nature of introspection.

The bold, solid blacks that emerged were like anchors, or perhaps the profound, silent unknowns that surface from the subconscious. They felt heavy and significant, yet also fluid in their organic forms, like shadows cast by unseen forces, or creatures from the deepest parts of the abyss. And then, those unexpected bursts of yellow, those winding, almost playful lines – they were sudden sparks of clarity, fleeting hopes, or perhaps the meandering path of a thought that refuses to be contained. They cut across the somber tones, a reminder that even in the deepest contemplation, life finds a way to gleam. The blue star, too, appeared as a sudden moment of wonder, a small, brilliant guide in the quiet expanse, a flash of recognition.

The title, "Thinking of a night sea," is intensely personal for me. It’s not just about looking at the sea at night; it’s about inhabiting that feeling, that state of being where the world simplifies, and the internal landscape becomes as boundless and mysterious as the ocean itself. My art is often a journey into these internal seas, navigating the currents of emotion and thought, searching for light in the darkness. This piece is a testament to those quiet hours, when the world outside fades, and the only journey is inward, into the beautiful, endless night sea of the soul.
