There are days when the studio feels less like a workspace and more like a confessional. My hands, stained with paint and glue, become extensions of a restless mind, sifting through the detritus of the world. It’s in these moments that a piece like *Witz* truly begins to breathe.
I remember staring at that blank canvas, feeling the weight of all the untold stories, the unheard murmurs of daily life. The first thing that drew me was the sheer vibrancy of that lime green. When I brushed it across the surface, I wasn't just laying down a color; I was trying to capture the electric hum of a busy street, the unexpected jolt of joy amidst the mundane. It’s a color that laughs, a little irreverently, a little too loud, and that felt right for what I wanted to say.
Then came the tearing. I found myself drawn to these scraps of paper, fragments of old magazines, newspaper clippings. Each rip wasn't an act of destruction, but of liberation. As I pulled at the edges, watching them fray, I thought about how our own lives are built from such disparate pieces – conversations half-remembered, headlines quickly forgotten, textures and colors that catch our eye for a fleeting second. I wasn't arranging them; I was letting them fall into place, coaxed by an instinct, like puzzle pieces that only fit perfectly in an illogical way. The challenge was in making sense of the beautiful nonsense.
The word "Magazin" flashes in the upper right, a tiny echo of mass communication, while other snippets of text scatter like seeds. When I glued down those half-visible letters, the 'vita della' fragment on the left, for instance, I wasn’t just adding a visual texture. I was thinking about the endless narratives surrounding us, how we grasp at threads of meaning, trying to construct our own stories from the overwhelming flow of information. It’s a whisper, a suggestion of a deeper tale, but never the whole story. The "URa" in the lower right, similarly, is a ghost of a word, a broken utterance, reflecting how much of our communication is incomplete, misinterpreted, or simply lost in translation.
The stripes, both vertical and horizontal, came next. They are my attempts to find a rhythm, a pulse within the chaos. They represent the routines, the structures we impose on our lives, the quiet order we crave. But then, almost immediately, I’d introduce something to disrupt it – a splash of fiery orange, a bold streak of red, or the almost crude tearing of another paper layer. It's this push and pull, the tension between what is organized and what is utterly free, that truly excites me. I was asking myself: where does clarity emerge from confusion?
For me, *Witz* isn't about telling a joke in the traditional sense. It's about that sudden, often wry, flash of insight. It’s the unexpected connection that makes disparate elements suddenly resonate, even if only for a moment. It's the subtle cleverness in the world, the ironic twist of fate, the beautiful absurdity that makes me pause and smile, or sometimes, sigh with a profound understanding. The name *Witz* captures that feeling—the profound, often bittersweet, intelligence hidden in the everyday jumble. It's the sudden burst of recognition, the subtle punchline of existence. This piece, with its layers of torn paper, vibrant colors, and fragmented thoughts, is my attempt to capture that exact sensation, to give form to the unexpected joy and the quiet wit that permeates everything. It’s a celebration of the cleverness inherent in simply being, and creating, in this messy, beautiful world.
