Calidium: Where Inner Calm Meets the Vividness of Life

Calidium (28"x28")
The canvas of "Calidium" is a landscape of my inner world, a place where I've tried to capture the feeling of quiet intensity. For me, "Calidium" isn't a word you'd find in a lexicon; it's a whisper from my heart, a blend of 'calm' and 'vivid.' It represents the serene core that endures amidst the swirling, often chaotic, vibrancy of existence – a gentle warmth that permeates even the coolest moments. This painting became my search for that very sensation.
When I first laid down the broad swaths of teal and soft blue, I remember feeling a vastness open up, like taking a deep breath after holding it for too long. These colors were my yearning for space, for a profound sense of peace to settle. I allowed them to spread, to mingle, letting the lighter hues suggest the play of light on a tranquil surface.
Then came the more structured, almost architectural elements. The vibrant yellow rectangle, for instance, felt like a sudden burst of an idea, a moment of brilliant clarity. And drawing those delicate, ladder-like lines within it? That was me thinking about aspiration, about the determined, step-by-step ascent towards something greater, even if the final destination remains a beautiful blur. It’s about the journey, not just the peak.
The soft, blushing pinks that appear in various corners were applied with a tenderness, a feeling of vulnerability and warmth. They represent the quiet hum of affection, the gentle connections that bind us, peeking through the stronger, bolder statements. I wanted them to feel subtle, like a secret shared.
The thick, textured whites are moments of pause, pure thought, or perhaps the pristine slate of a new beginning. I loved how the physicality of the paint itself became so apparent here, each ridge and valley telling a small story of the brush's journey across the surface. They felt like breaths, allowing the eye to rest before moving on.
As for the bolder, darker elements – the solid black shape, the deep forest green – these are my anchors. They represent the unwavering parts of ourselves, the foundations that hold steady when everything else feels fluid. I needed them there, resolute and strong, to give gravity to the ethereal. And those sharp, vivid touches of red? They were bursts of passion, tiny declarations, moments of intense feeling that punctuate the everyday, reminding me of the fierce joy of being alive.
Down at the bottom right, those distinct U-shapes, with their slightly organic wobble, emerged almost subconsciously. I pictured them as quiet, steady supports, perhaps the legs of a beloved, familiar table, or simply rhythmic echoes, holding up the canvas's own unique world. They brought a sense of playful structure to the overall abstraction.
Every stroke, every layered color, every decision made on this canvas was an exploration of that 'Calidium' within me. It wasn't just about painting; it was about living through the process of feeling, struggling, and ultimately, finding a harmonious balance between my inner calm and the vivid experiences of life. This piece, more than most, is a testament to that ongoing search.
