Durees: The Layering of Emotion, Persistent Spirit, and Constant Becoming

Durees (40"x30)

The canvas, when I first faced it, felt like an expanse of time itself. A silent, waiting duration. My work, "Durees," is less a painting of a scene and more a record of a continuous unfolding, a testament to the persistent rhythm of living.

I began with a riot of color, feeling a surge of pure, unadulterated emotion. The bold strokes of vibrant pink, the deep, swirling blues, the electric greens – they weren't planned, but rather erupted from within me, like moments of intense joy and sudden revelation. I layered them, one over another, letting the edges blur and bleed, because that's how life feels, isn't it? One experience flowing into the next, creating a rich, textured history. When I pressed the thick turquoise and orange against the canvas, I was thinking of the sheer density of experience, the beautiful weight of accumulated days.

Then came the lines, the arcs, the scribbles. I drew the sweeping white arches with a sense of hopeful passage, like bridges connecting disparate parts of my journey, or perhaps the cyclical nature of thoughts that return, echoing through "Durees." The jagged blue lines cut through the softness, sharp and sudden, representing those moments of disruption or clarity that punctuate our existence. And the wild, untamed white scribbles? Those are my inner voice, the endless chatter, the persistent musings that accompany me through every duration.

The snippets of paper, with their German words—"gute," "auch," "für," "es," "gibt," "uns"—they found their own place, almost like fragments of memory or affirmations whispered over time. As I adhered "gute" (good) here, and "für uns" (for us) there, I was reminded of the little positive truths we gather, the small mercies that persist, shaping "us" through our collective and individual "Durees." "Es gibt auch" (there is also) became a quiet mantra, a recognition that even in chaos, there is always something more, something enduring.

And the paper boats, those delicate vessels sailing across the vibrant currents of the painting, they are perhaps the heart of "Durees." They are fragile, yet they persist, navigating the tumultuous waters of time. I drew them thinking of journeys taken, of dreams carried, of the resilience of the human spirit. They are small symbols of hope, carrying memories and aspirations through every single moment, every stretch of duration.

For me, "Durees" is more than just 'durations' in the sense of time passing. It's about the quality of that time, the layering of emotion, the accumulation of experience, and the incredible persistence of spirit that allows us to live through it all. Every stroke, every color, every fragmented word and image on this canvas contributes to that ongoing story, to the enduring self that is continuously shaped by its "Durees." This painting is a reflection of my own continuous unfolding, a celebration of existing, with all its glorious messiness and profound beauty. It’s the continuous existence, the constant becoming, that I sought to capture, raw and honest, on this canvas.
