Dachae: The Many Colors of My Soul

Dachae (30"x24")
The name "Dachae" holds a profound place in my heart, for it means "many colors" or "diverse hues" in Korean, and it is the very essence of this work. It’s not just about the spectrum you see on the canvas; it’s a reflection of the rich, often kaleidoscopic, tapestry of life as I experience it, and indeed, the myriad emotions that flicker and burst within me.
When I began this journey, I wasn't just mixing paints; I was recalling moments, feelings, and fragments of memory. As I laid down the expansive greens and the warm, luminous yellows in the upper planes, I was immersed in a feeling of hopeful growth, of the earth's quiet generosity, and the sun’s gentle embrace. Each vertical stripe, each gentle taper of yellow, felt like a pillar of optimism, reaching upwards.
Then came the blues—a striking, almost electric turquoise, juxtaposed with deeper, more introspective indigos. I remember feeling a pull between the boundless sky and the deep, silent waters of contemplation as I shaped these forms. The soft, tender pinks that emerge and recede were moments of vulnerability, unexpected tenderness woven into the strength of the composition.
The vibrant oranges and deep, earthy reds that anchor the lower sections, for me, they are about passion, about the fundamental energy of being, and the groundedness that comes from deep connection to oneself and the world. As I layered these hues, building up their texture, I felt the weight and beauty of foundation, of the deep roots from which all else springs.
I wasn't just drawing lines; I was outlining experiences. Those crisp, defined edges spoke to my need for order, for clarity amidst life’s beautiful chaos. Yet, the soft, sweeping curves that embrace other shapes were my acknowledgement of fluidity, of the gentle bending and yielding required to move through existence. The way elements seem to almost breathe into each other, some overlapping, some peeking through, it’s a metaphor for how distinct parts of my life, my spirit, interact and find harmony.
"Dachae" is truly a celebration of this internal multiplicity. It's a testament to my belief that beauty isn't found in a singular, perfect hue, but in the vibrant, sometimes conflicting, often unexpected, coming together of them all. This canvas holds the 'many colors' of my soul, poured out in pigment and form, an enduring exploration of what it means to be alive, in all its vivid complexity.
