Daring to Ask: An Artist's Dialogue with the Canvas

But what if (80"x60")

When I first approached this canvas, it felt like standing before a vast, silent question. I laid down the deep, consuming black first, not as an absence, but as a space brimming with potential, with the unwritten stories of every past decision and every road not taken. As my brush moved, I thought of the profound unknown that surrounds us, the rich darkness before dawn.

Then came the white. Oh, the sheer, exhilarating force of it! I wasn't just painting over the black; I was carving out new paths, slashing through the perceived certainties, letting the white erupt like a sudden, blinding insight. With each bold, sweeping stroke, I wrestled with the idea of emergence, of pulling clarity from the chaos. I remembered moments in my own life where everything felt obscured, only for a stark, new truth to reveal itself, demanding to be seen. The texture of the white, thick and impasto, carries the weight of those struggles and triumphs, the sheer effort of making something new.

The gold elements were moments of pure, unadulterated hope and intuition. When I outlined those ovals, or dropped those little dashes of metallic light, I imagined them as fleeting glimpses of possibility, the sparks that ignite new ideas. They are the whispers of "But what if" – what if things could be different? What if there's a shimmering alternative just beyond the edge of what I currently perceive? The solid gold circle, a perfect, unblemished orb, felt like a concentrated dream, a single, cherished potential.

And the lines, the intricate dances of them. The fine white scribbles, almost like thoughts tumbling out onto the surface, chasing each other. The distinct "eye" shape, emerging from the white, stared back at me as I painted it. I felt as if I was looking within, questioning my own perceptions, daring to see beyond the obvious. The small blue accents within it, and the subtle grid-like patterns, were my attempts to find a new kind of structure within the inherent wildness, to map out the unmappable.

The title, 'But what if', is truly the heartbeat of this piece, and perhaps of my entire journey as an artist. It’s the whisper that pushes me forward when doubt tries to pull me back. It’s the courage to deviate, to dismantle, to build anew. Every line I drew, every color I chose, was born from that very question. What if I make this mark? What if I layer this shade? What if I abandon what's expected and follow this unexpected impulse? It’s a philosophy of embracing uncertainty, of finding beauty in the untested waters, and of understanding that every single possibility holds its own unique truth. This work is a testament to that ongoing inquiry, an open-ended dialogue with the canvas, and ultimately, with myself. It's about the endless potential that exists in daring to ask, "But what if?"
