Edge of Consciousness: My Journey from Intuition to Intention

Edge of conciousness (54"x72")
The canvas beckoned, a vast expanse of potential, much like the moments just before an idea fully forms in my mind. When I named this piece, "Edge of Consciousness," I was articulating that very space—the liminal, vibrant frontier where raw intuition brushes against the emerging light of understanding. It’s where dreams begin to coalesce into thought, where feelings are potent but wordless, where the soul feels most unbound and yet on the precipice of definition. This title, for me, is a compass pointing to the heart of my artistic exploration, a continuous journey into the self.
As my brush, loaded with thick black pigment, swept across the surface, I wasn't just making marks; I was wrestling with the unformed, the primal energy that churns beneath everyday awareness. These bold, heavy shapes that dominate the canvas—they are the weight of unspoken thoughts, the deep, dark currents of the subconscious. I felt a visceral release in their creation, a kind of primal roar manifesting on linen. It was a necessary chaos, a raw outpouring of what words often fail to grasp.
Amidst these powerful black forms, I let the softer greys and expansive whites breathe. These weren’t merely backgrounds; they were the silent spaces where clarity might eventually bloom, the moments of pause amidst the mental storm. The white, especially, felt like drawing a deep breath, a conscious return to presence.
Then came the scribbles, the hasty lines, the half-formed symbols scattered across the upper reaches and throughout the composition. These are echoes of my own mind in motion, fragments of thoughts that flicker and fade, whispers of ideas yet to fully articulate themselves. As I scratched them onto the surface, I was acknowledging the relentless activity of the mind, the endless internal monologue, the subtle ways we try to make sense of our inner landscapes. They are the raw data of existence, recorded in a language only I truly understand.
The more structured elements—the stark blue vertical lines, the corrugated cardboard rectangle—these were deliberate acts, my conscious mind reaching for order, for a framework. They represent the human impulse to organize, to define, to build a stable ground within the fluidity of experience. The thin gold circle, a fleeting moment of perfection, a precious memory or an unexpected insight that shines brightly.
And the colors, those small, intense bursts—the vibrant green, the soft pink collage, the electric blue squiggle at the bottom right, that radiant yellow circle like a nascent sun. Each was a spark of emotion, a sudden flash of hope, a poignant memory resurfacing, or a jolt of inspiration cutting through the haze. I felt a profound connection to these moments, like small windows opening onto different chambers of my being.
The layers, the textures, the way some elements seem to emerge from beneath others, while some are starkly placed on top—this is my process, mirroring the complex architecture of our inner lives. It's about building, erasing, revealing, and obscuring. It's about the continuous dance between intuition and intention, the struggle and the joy of being human, all captured on the "Edge of Consciousness." Each stroke, each scrape, each found object adhered to the canvas, is a trace of that journey, a testament to the thrilling, terrifying beauty of existing at that very edge.
