Nabi: A Profound Journey, Finding Wings on Canvas

Nabi (36"x36")

There are days when the canvas calls to me with a quiet urgency, a blank space waiting to absorb the storm and calm within my soul. "Nabi" began on such a day. The name itself, meaning butterfly, has always resonated deeply with me, a whisper of transformation and the fragile beauty of flight. When I titled this piece, I wasn't just naming a painting; I was acknowledging a profound journey, both my own and the one I hoped to capture within these colors and lines. It’s about the spirit, striving for release, finding its wings.

As my brush first swept across the surface, I plunged into the vibrant heart of it all. I laid down those deep, earthy reds on the left, feeling a visceral connection to the raw, pulsating emotions that ground us. It was a block of intensity, a foundation of feeling, and as I dragged the paint, I thought of the profound experiences that shape us, sometimes heavy, sometimes fiery. Then, the warm, expansive yellows and oranges flooded the rest of the canvas. I envisioned fields of sun-drenched possibilities, the boundless energy that drives us forward. Each layer of this golden hue felt like a breath, a surge of life and optimism, but also a complex tapestry of experiences, some bright, some shadowed, revealed through the texture I built up.

I found myself craving moments of respite, of stark contrast. Those cool teal and light blue segments emerged from a desire for clarity, for a moment of quiet reflection amidst the fervor. When I pulled those white strokes through the red, it felt like breaking through, finding a new path, a glimpse of light piercing the darkness. The sharp black forms, I placed them deliberately, like anchors, or perhaps shadows that give form to light, carving out space and adding a grounding weight to the composition.

The lines I scratched into the paint, almost like ancient script or whispered secrets, weren't planned; they were an impulse. They are the marks of time, the subtle pathways and decisions we navigate, some leading nowhere, others forming connections. They are the imperfections that tell a story, the traces of struggle and discovery.

And then, there, in the bottom right, the delicate outline of a cage began to form, almost subconsciously. And within it, a single butterfly. But others, I let them flutter freely around it, escaping the confines. This was the heart of "Nabi" for me – the enduring yearning for freedom, the constant push against invisible boundaries, and the belief that, even if one moment finds us contained, the spirit of flight, of transformation, is ever-present and always seeking release. As I painted those small, fragile forms, I poured into them all the hope and vulnerability that defines our journey. It is a reminder that beauty can emerge from struggle, and that even in confinement, the dream of wings persists.
