Freiburg II: A Reflection of Beautiful Chaos

Freiburg II (50"x40")

The canvas called to me, a quiet, expectant space that promised release. When I began *Freiburg II*, I wasn't setting out to capture a specific scene, but rather a sensation—a lingering echo of light and shadow, of motion and stillness. The name "Freiburg II" itself holds a special place in my heart, a return to a landscape, a memory, or perhaps just a feeling that first took root in an earlier work. It signifies a deeper dive, a second contemplation of something profoundly impactful in my life, a spiritual landscape rather than a literal one.

I remember mixing the greens, a deliberate layering of olive and chartreuse, letting them bleed into soft, sun-drenched yellows. As I applied these initial washes, I wasn't thinking of grass or trees, but of the very air, the way light filters through the canopy of a forest, or the muted glow before a storm. Each stroke was a breath, a meditation on the quiet hum of existence. I allowed myself to get lost in the interplay of these earthy tones, letting the brush dance and scratch, building up a history of gestures beneath what would later emerge.

Then came the dark, sweeping lines. When I laid down that thick, commanding black curve, wrapping around the left side, I felt a surge of raw energy, a deliberate disruption to the gentle background. It was an impulse, a powerful current pulling through the calmer waters, almost like a sudden thought cutting through a reverie. And the brilliant white strokes that followed, arcing and swirling, they were a direct response, a counterpoint—the light breaking through, the chaos finding its own rhythm. I felt my hand moving with an intuitive force, each swirl and dash an extension of an inner dialogue, a dance between intention and accident.

The small, vibrant accents, like the intense blue circle on the left, were moments of absolute clarity. When I placed that blue, it was like a sudden, sharp intake of breath, a pinpoint of focus amidst the swirling energy. It's a color I often return to, a nod to the quiet power I find in simple, unadulterated hues. Similarly, the smaller, more abstract squares of ochre or burnt orange emerged as fragments of memory or fleeting perceptions, anchors within the larger flow.

Every scratch, every drip, every subtle mark you see on *Freiburg II* is a record of that journey. They are not mistakes, but rather the very texture of my process, the traces of thought and feeling left behind. There's a certain joy in embracing the imperfect, in letting the history of the painting show through. This piece, *Freiburg II*, is a reflection of how I see the world—a constant negotiation between structure and freedom, between the known and the utterly spontaneous. It's a place where I allow myself to wander, to explore, and to ultimately find a sense of belonging in the beautiful chaos of creation.
