Humming: The Internal Melody of My Spirit

Humming (36"x36")

When I began this canvas, I felt a quiet stirring, a gentle current beneath the surface of my thoughts. It was less a grand vision and more a series of soft impulses, like a melody forming without conscious effort. Each stroke, each carefully chosen hue, became a note in that internal song.

As I laid down the bright yellow, I wasn't just applying paint; I was summoning the warmth of a sunlit memory, a burst of unexpected joy that felt like a quiet laugh. And then the soft pinks, they emerged from a tenderness within me, a gentle whisper of affection or a fleeting blush. I found myself drawn to these colors, letting them bloom and recede, creating spaces where light and shadow could play.

The textures, oh, the textures. I built them up, scraping, layering, almost like excavating fragments of old conversations or half-forgotten dreams. The bits of printed paper peeking through, they are whispers from the world outside, grounding the ethereal with echoes of reality. When I worked with the deep, earthy oranges and reds, I felt a grounding energy, a warmth that settled deep in my bones, like the comfort of a familiar presence. The cool blues and teals offered a respite, a moment of breath, like looking at a clear sky or finding stillness in a bustling day.

Those thin, wandering lines I etched across the surface, they weren't planned. My hand just moved, tracing the path of a thought, a momentary doubt, or a sudden realization. They are the threads that connect disparate moments, the subtle currents that move beneath the surface of our awareness. And the small, almost hidden marks—the tiny plant, the distant bicycle, the dots scattered like musical notes—these are the small wonders I observe, the tiny details that often go unnoticed but fill me with a quiet sense of delight. They are the gentle rhythms of life.

This piece, I named it "Humming." For me, humming is a profound state. It’s not singing out loud, not declaring with force, but an internal vibration, a soft, continuous sound that often accompanies deep thought, contentment, or focused creation. It’s the sound of being entirely present, lost in the quiet joy of a moment or an idea. When I was immersed in creating this painting, that was the feeling that enveloped me – a gentle, persistent hum of life, of color, of form. It's the internal melody of my spirit, a reminder that beauty often resides in the subtle, the sustained, the unspoken. "Humming" is an ode to that quiet, resonant energy that drives me, day in and day out, to bring these unseen worlds to life. It's the sound of my soul finding its rhythm.
