Ingress: Entering the Canvas, Discovering the Self

Ingress (36"x48")
When I stood before the blank canvas, a deep sigh escaped me, a mix of apprehension and exhilaration. I began with the blues, layers upon layers, not a single, flat shade, but a tapestry of sky and ocean depths, of twilight and forgotten dreams. As I spread the paint, I felt myself submerging into a vast, unknown space, a profound stillness where thoughts could finally breathe. This deep indigo, then the softer lavender, and the brighter azure – they weren't just colors; they were the echoes of my own inner landscape, a boundless field of potential.
I remember drawing that long, winding yellow line, a fleeting thought captured, a path emerging from intuition rather than design. It meandered, unburdened by destination, much like my own journey through ideas. Then came the turquoise curve, a counterpoint, perhaps a whisper of another possibility, a different current in the flow of time. Each stroke felt like a pulse, a quiet affirmation of existence.
The sudden splash of orange, those bold, declarative blocks – they felt like moments of revelation, bursts of energy interrupting the calm expanse. They weren't just interruptions; they were necessary contrasts, the sharp edges of discovery. Within them, I etched symbols: zigzags like static, lines like coded messages, little ladders climbing towards something unseen. I wasn't depicting a physical place; I was drawing the architecture of my own mind as it tried to make sense of the world, to build connections where none seemed apparent.
Those scattered white dots, they came to me like stars across a personal cosmos, or perhaps the fleeting insights that light up a path for just a moment. And the small, stark black square, a profound emptiness, a void, yet contained, a focal point of introspection. I drew those tiny shoe outlines, a whimsical thought of journey, of steps taken and those yet to be embarked upon. Each element, however small, was a testament to the myriad sensations that pass through me during creation.
The title, 'Ingress,' is deeply personal to me. It isn't merely a name for this work; it embodies the very essence of my artistic pursuit and, indeed, my life. To me, 'Ingress' signifies a threshold, an act of entering. It’s about the profound moment of stepping into a new understanding, a new space, both within myself and in my relationship with the canvas. It is the beginning of discovery, the first breath drawn as one crosses into the unknown. Each time I approach a new work, I experience an 'Ingress' — an entry into a dialogue with the unseen, a foray into the depths of my own creative spirit. This painting, in its layers and fragmented symbols, is a visual diary of one such entry, a map of my own conscious and unconscious navigation into new artistic territories. It’s an invitation, not just for me to begin, but for anyone who beholds it to also find their own point of entry, their own personal 'Ingress' into its world.
