Mensa Sub Stellis: Where Domestic and Cosmic Gently Intertwine

Abstract Still Life Painting – Original Wall Art – Oil & Acrylic on Canvas – Mensa Sub Stellis (24"x24")

The air in my studio often hums with a quiet energy, a silent conversation between canvas and color. When I began *Mensa Sub Stellis*, I felt an undeniable pull towards a certain kind of nocturnal intimacy, a sense of wonder that only emerges when the world outside grows dim.

As I laid down the initial washes of deep ultramarine for the night sky, a profound solitude embraced me, yet it was not a lonely feeling. Instead, it was a space for dreams, for contemplating the vast, sparkling tapestry beyond our grasp. Each tiny yellow dot I painted for a star was a whisper of possibility, a silent beacon in the darkness. I wanted the window to be a gateway, not just to a view, but to a state of mind, a moment where the domestic and the cosmic gently intertwine.

The vibrant yellows and oranges of the room's interior and the flowers were a deliberate counterpoint, a surge of warmth against the cool expanse of the night. When I brushed these lively hues onto the canvas, I was thinking of comfort, of the simple, tangible joys that ground us. The flowers, with their bold, almost primitive forms, are my ode to resilience and beauty found in everyday life, reaching upwards as if yearning for the light.

And then there is the table, the *Mensa*. When I sculpted the soft, flowing drapery of the tablecloth, I was lost in the tactile sensation of fabric, imagining its gentle folds catching the soft glow. It became a stage for humble treasures: the ripe fruits, plump with life, reminding me of nature's bounty and the fleeting sweetness of existence; the cool, refreshing promise held within the glass.

The flickering candle, a humble flame, was perhaps the most poignant element for me. As I painted its soft, uncertain glow, I was overcome with the quiet power of light in darkness, a symbol of hope, presence, and introspection. It’s a small, brave fire holding its own against the immense, indifferent night. The creeping vine, weaving its way through the scene, speaks to life’s gentle persistence, its organic rhythm that continues regardless of the hour or the season.

The title, *Mensa Sub Stellis* – a table under the stars – encapsulates so much of what I felt during its creation. It's about finding our place, our small, precious corner, within the grand, bewildering universe. It's about how even amidst the infinite, we find meaning in the familiar, in shared meals, in quiet moments of reflection, illuminated by a tiny flame while the entire cosmos watches on. It's an invitation to pause, to look both inward at our immediate surroundings and outward at the boundless mystery, and to find beauty in both. This painting is, in many ways, a diary entry of my own heart, a quiet contemplation of what it means to be alive, to observe, and to create in the presence of such vast beauty.
