My Stille: Finding Calm in the Vibrant Chaos

Stille (73"x59")
When I began this canvas, I wasn't seeking to depict a scene or a specific object. No, I was trying to capture something far more elusive: the internal landscape of my own quiet. This is my "Stille."
For me, "Stille" isn't merely the absence of sound. It's the profound quiet that settles within when the world outside becomes a muted hum. It’s the space where my true voice emerges, unburdened by external clamor. It's a chosen solitude, a necessary pause for the soul to breathe and process the vibrant chaos of existence. Creating this piece was an immersion into that very "Stille."
I remember layering the deep burgundies and rich browns, feeling the weight of introspection, the quiet contemplation of things settled deep within. Then, I let the hot pink explode, a fierce, unapologetic burst of joy, a whisper of defiance, a vivid memory surging forward. The bright oranges and blues followed, like sudden insights or fleeting moments of unexpected clarity that cut through the heavier hues.
Each rectangular block I painted felt like a thought, a memory, a fragment of an experience I was placing, one on top of the other, building an internal city of the mind. Sometimes they overlapped, obscuring what was beneath, just as some thoughts overshadow others. The swift, bold stroke of that orange arc across the canvas – that was a moment of decision, a clear path emerging from the tangle. And the gentle curve of the blue beside it, a softer reflection, a comforting presence.
I remember scrawling those words – "Nein," "Ja," "Kontrolle" – almost unconsciously. They were the echoes of my inner dialogue, the constant push and pull of choices, anxieties, and small, private affirmations that play out in the quiet spaces of my mind. Even the playful "froh es ist enten" was a secret smile to myself, a tiny spark of lightheartedness amidst the more profound wrestling. Those vertical white lines on the left, they felt like the rhythm of breath, a quiet pulse, or perhaps the silent bars of a personal introspection, a filter through which I observe the world. And the white drips? Those were pure surrender, moments when the emotion was too much to contain, flowing freely, imperfectly, yet beautifully down the surface, leaving their honest mark.
This canvas, "Stille," is a testament to the beauty I find in that internal quiet – not an empty void, but a rich, complex space where true understanding begins. It's the celebration of finding my own calm within the vibrant, sometimes overwhelming, tapestry of life.
