Naui: My Own Visual Diary

Naui (40"x40")
"Naui." It's not just a title; it's a declaration. It means "mine," "my own." And this canvas, in every stroke, every color, every curious form, truly is mine. It's the visual diary of my being, the landscape of my inner world, laid bare.
When I began, I immersed myself in the vibrant yellow that washes over so much of the canvas. It wasn't just a color; it was the warmth of a new morning, the exhilarating energy of an idea just taking root. I felt an unbridled optimism surge through me as I spread it across, a foundation of pure, unadulterated possibility.
Then came the stark black lines, the geometric forms. These were my thoughts wrestling with structure, the frameworks I build around my experiences – sometimes rigid, sometimes open like that hollow cube, inviting inspection from all sides. I was grappling with the tangible and intangible, the ways we try to define what is inherently indefinable. The sharp angles and definite shapes were me trying to pin down a fleeting idea, to give form to the formless.
The soft, undulating pinks emerged, a gentle playfulness, a moment of vulnerability. I remember tracing those squiggly red lines within the large pink form, feeling a lightness, a whimsical dance of emotions that defy logic. And the smaller pink form with its scattered blue dots – those felt like tiny fragments of joy or fleeting memories that sparkle and disappear before you can fully grasp them.
The deep greens, especially that long, rooted shape and the elegant arch, spoke to me of nature's quiet persistence, of growth, and the gentle cycles of life. When I laid down the bold green 'U' at the top, I felt a sense of grounding, a connection to something ancient and stable, like a strong embrace. The subtle green arc that sweeps across the bottom suggested a journey, a path taken or yet to be explored.
Those bright orange shapes, like open vessels or welcoming gates, they represent the pathways I've traveled, the experiences I've gathered, and the creative spirit that constantly seeks to expand. I thought of them as holding my aspirations, my hopes, ready to be filled or to pour forth.
And the little marks – the tiny purple footprints scattered across the white space, the blue dots like scattered stardust, the quick dashes and subtle scribbles – these are the fleeting moments, the small steps, the whispers of intuition. They are the intricate details that make life rich and complex, often unnoticed yet essential to the whole.
The teal oval, clear and bold, felt like a focal point, a moment of clarity amidst the beautiful chaos, a singular thought taking perfect form, or perhaps a window into a hidden realm. It demanded attention, a pause in the visual conversation.
Each stroke, each blending of color, was a conversation with myself. The soft grays and muted blues were moments of quiet reflection, pauses in the vibrant symphony, allowing me to breathe and observe the unfolding narrative. They are the calm spaces where thoughts coalesce before bursting forth again.
"Naui" is my declaration that this is all me – the joy, the struggle, the vibrant chaos, the quiet moments of peace, the search for meaning, the pure, unadulterated experience of being. It is my world, captured in color and form, a testament to the ever-unfolding story that is mine alone to tell.
