Quelque chose: Unearthing the Profound Something

Quelque chose (72"x54")

I remember the hum of the studio, the faint scent of pigment settling in the air. When I began "Quelque chose," I wasn't setting out to capture a specific image or a grand narrative. Instead, I found myself drawn to the canvas as a space for exploration, a place to wrestle with the whispers of my own mind.

I started with those deep, earthy browns and ochres, letting them spread and blend, creating a kind of primordial soup. As I layered these base colors, I thought of the ground beneath us, the rich soil of memory and experience that underpins everything. There's a certain raw honesty to these tones; they feel grounding, like the silent truths that resonate deep within. I let them flow, creating those subtle, almost organic patterns, like water drying on a surface or the slow movement of sediment, reflecting how life often unfolds in its own gentle, sometimes messy, rhythm.

Then came the white. A sweeping gesture, a bold, almost defiant assertion against the backdrop. When I laid down that expansive white form, I felt a surge of clarity, a release. It was like breathing out after holding my breath, a moment of pure, unadulterated presence. I allowed its edges to be soft and textured, hinting at both strength and vulnerability. Those specks of gold leaf I pressed into the thick white paint? They felt like fragments of unearthed beauty, small treasures discovered in the expansive landscape of being, reflecting light, catching the eye as something precious and unexpected. And that long, decisive white stroke, cutting through the space – it was a moment of instinct, a path cleared, a declaration.

The black lines, for me, are the navigators, the threads that weave through the unseen. When I curved that bold, arcing line around the white, I was thinking about connection, about boundaries that define but also embrace. The smaller, sharper black marks, some solid, some just outlines, were like sudden thoughts, interruptions, or moments of profound introspection – the contrast they offered was vital, giving weight and anchor to the lighter forms.

And then, there's that turquoise, that vibrant, almost electric blue. It arrived on the canvas with a jolt, a sudden, undeniable presence. When I shaped that oval, I was immersed in a feeling of discovery, a moment of pure, unexpected joy or insight. It’s like finding a rare gemstone in the earth, or a clear pool of water in a vast, dry landscape. It’s a core, a heartbeat, a focal point that demands attention, a reminder that even in the most muted of landscapes, a vivid spark can emerge.

The title, "Quelque chose"—it means "something." For me, it encapsulates the very essence of what I strive to capture in my art, and indeed, what I experience in life. It’s the feeling of knowing there’s *something* profound just beyond words, *something* intangible that moves us, *something* that connects us to a deeper truth. It's not about defining every brushstroke, or explaining every color. Instead, it’s about acknowledging the elusive, the undefinable, the persistent sense that there is always *more*. It’s the feeling of seeking, of almost grasping, of recognizing the beautiful, messy, indefinable "something" that makes up our existence. "Quelque chose" is an ode to that mystery, to the constant unfolding of the unknown, and to the quiet satisfaction of simply being present with it, whatever "it" may be.
