Static: The Hum of Existence and Enduring Meaning

Static (36"x36")

When I stand before "Static," I recall the precise moments I laid down each layer, each line, each texture. It wasn't about depicting a scene; it was about capturing a feeling, a state of being that often eludes words.

The large block of deep black on the right side, for instance – I painted it with a sense of gravity, an acknowledgment of the vast, silent spaces within us and around us. It's an anchor, a void that simultaneously grounds and expands. It’s a deliberate cessation, a moment where everything else fades into the background.

Then, the prominent white field in the upper middle, crisscrossed with those assertive black vertical lines. As I dragged my tool across the canvas, scoring the paint, I wasn't just creating texture; I was giving form to the incessant hum of daily existence, the constant noise that fills our lives. Those fine, almost ethereal blue lines interwoven within represent fleeting thoughts, whispers just below the threshold of awareness – the ever-present, subtle 'static' of consciousness.

The piece of corrugated cardboard, carefully positioned, speaks to the mundane, the overlooked, the discarded elements that form the fabric of our everyday. It's a fragment, taken from its ordinary context and given a place of prominence, urging a pause, a moment of reconsideration. It’s a small, tangible piece of the world's constant chatter.

Below, the warm, earthy brown block with its constellation of white markings – those are not symbols to be deciphered, but rather echoes of ancient scripts, half-remembered dreams, the silent narratives etched into our collective memory. I meticulously scratched each one, feeling the weight of untold stories, the persistent 'static' of history and individual experience that shapes who we are.

The sharp, vertical red line that slices through the composition was a moment of instinct, a vivid jolt. It's the sudden, undeniable truth that cuts through ambiguity, a passionate declaration amidst the measured calm. It's the clarity that emerges from the fuzz.

And the soft, pale blue block in the lower right corner – I applied that color with a yearning for tranquility. It’s a patch of sky, a quiet pool of thought, offering a breath of serenity amidst the dynamic tension of the other elements.

For me, "Static" isn't about being unmoving or inert. It's about the persistent presence of something unchanging, the underlying current beneath the surface chaos. It's the hum of existence, the background noise, yes, but also the enduring truth that holds everything together. I poured my heart into gathering these disparate visual elements, arranging them, balancing them, in an attempt to capture the quiet strength found in the constant, often imperceptible, 'static' of our lives. It’s my way of finding enduring meaning in the perpetual motion.
