The Silent Symphony of Vagus

Vagus (32"x40")
As I approached the canvas, a deep sigh escaped me, a settling into the quiet space where only paint and intention exist. I began by coaxing the greens onto the surface, layer upon layer, letting them bleed and mingle. It felt like delving into an ancient forest floor, or perhaps the hidden, damp interiors of something alive – an organ, a dream. I wasn't just mixing colors; I was conjuring a primal hum, the very ground of being.
Then came the ochres and oranges, bold strokes that carved pathways through the verdant depths. As my brush moved, I pictured a vital current, the warmth of circulation, the slow, deliberate pulse that sustains us. It was a surge of life, an earthy energy that grounded the ethereal greens, giving them a tangible pulse.
The white lines emerged next, sweeping and looping, a dance of threads across the canvas. When I laid down these meandering curves, particularly the prominent circle in the lower right, I wasn't just making a mark; I was tracing the very idea of connection, of an unseen thread weaving through every part of existence. This is where the essence of 'Vagus' truly came alive for me. The Vagus nerve, with its long, wandering path from brain to gut, is a silent orchestrator of our inner world. It’s the whisper of intuition, the quiet hum of regulation, the unseen architect of calm amidst chaos. For me, the title 'Vagus' is a tribute to that profound, often overlooked internal landscape – the subtle, intricate network that shapes our feelings, our peace, our very sense of self.
Those stark black shapes, sharp and angular, scattered across the surface, were moments of interruption, sudden signals. They were the unexpected flickers, the necessary pauses, perhaps even the tiny, rapid firings of information travelling along those pathways. They introduced a delicate tension, a reminder that even within flow, there are sharp edges, distinct points of contact. And the vibrant splashes of orange, almost like drops of concentrated life, were bursts of pure, raw feeling, spontaneous and undeniable.
Painting 'Vagus' was a journey into the intricate dance of the body and mind, a meditation on the unseen forces that govern us. It was an act of listening to the internal rhythms, of giving form to the silent symphony of being. Every stroke, every color choice, was an attempt to capture that profound, beautiful complexity that lives within us all.
