Sigan Sai: The Vibrant Life That Unfolds In The 'Between'

Sigan Sai (48"x60")
As I stood before the blank canvas, a quiet anticipation settled over me, a feeling that something essential was waiting to reveal itself. I often begin this way, with a gentle hum of curiosity in my heart, wondering what truths will emerge through color and form. With 'Sigan Sai', this feeling was particularly strong, almost as if the canvas itself was a portal.
I remember picking up the softest pink first, letting it bloom across the upper part of the canvas. It wasn't just a color; it was a memory of a tranquil dawn, a whisper of hope. Then came the lavenders and blues, layered over each other, some gently brushed, others applied with a bolder stroke, creating a subtle dance of textures. I was thinking of the way light shifts throughout the day, how moments blend into one another, creating a rich tapestry of experience. These varied textures, some smooth, some rough, mirror the diverse surfaces and sensations I encounter in my daily journey.
When I introduced the strong, deep blue, I felt a surge of energy. It was a deliberate counterpoint, a grounding force against the ethereal pastels. Next to it, I placed that vibrant yellow, a burst of pure joy, like a sudden laugh in a quiet room. I wanted to capture those unexpected sparks of brilliance that illuminate our lives. And those little green circles? They felt like scattered thoughts, fleeting ideas, or perhaps glimpses of distant landscapes seen through a window – fresh, alive, and ever-present. The corrugated silver elements, contrasting with the painted surfaces, were my way of acknowledging the unexpected, the industrial against the organic, the structured against the fluid. They felt like tiny pieces of urban life, neatly tucked into a dreamscape.
The numbers – 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9 – they appeared almost intuitively on that warm, peachy rectangle. They aren't meant to be read in any particular order, but rather to evoke the fragmented nature of memory and perception. They are whispers of dates, times, sequences that shape our lives, yet rarely present themselves in a neat, linear fashion. They are the fragments we collect, the moments we try to hold onto, beautiful in their disarray.
The title, 'Sigan Sai', means "between time" or "in the space of time" in Korean, and it is truly the heartbeat of this piece, and in many ways, of my artistic philosophy. I often find myself living in the interstitial spaces – not just between one moment and the next, but between thoughts, between emotions, between what is seen and what is felt. 'Sigan Sai' represents that profound sense of existing within the flow, of witnessing the subtle shifts and juxtapositions that define our experience. It's about finding the beauty in the pause, the richness in the transition, the vibrant life that unfolds in the 'between'.
Creating 'Sigan Sai' was an exploration of how these disparate elements – colors, textures, shapes, and even fragments of numbers – can coexist and create a harmonious whole, much like the multifaceted nature of our own lives. It was a journey of piecing together the intangible, of giving form to the passage of time and the emotions that reside within it. Every stroke, every chosen hue, was a meditation on this very idea, a celebration of the present moment, held gently in the vast expanse of 'Sigan Sai'.
